-Lipstick redesign-

OVERVIEW

A lipstick packaging design which reduces the wastage of product inside the lipstick case, which is the problem with the majority of the existing packaging.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

Duration

6 weeks

Role

User Research, Concept generation, 3d Modelling, Rendering, Prototyping

Type

Product wastage is a great contributor to global warming and the climate deterioration. The problem becomes worse when the product has not fulfilled its full potential. That is what happened to lipsticks. Approximately 40% of the product is still left inside the tube after the consumer reaches the inner tub.

TARGET AUDIENCE

RESEARCH

  • Makeup users

  • Environment-friendly citizens who are into sustainable manufacturing

Secondary research was conducted to understand what the other companies in the market were doing to solve similar problems.

USER RESEARCH

Primary research

Primary research was conducted in the form of interviews and google forms to understand how the consumers viewed the problem and whether they were aware of the wastage at hand. I also opened up an empty lipstick case to examine how much product was remaining after reaching the tub of the liptstick.

Main objective: To understand the buying pattern and mindset of the customers. With the primary research, it was also found that the majority of the users were not aware of the amount of product left within the tube once they are 'finished'.

INSIGHTS

It was identified that the majority of the consumers are not aware of how much product is left within the tub even after they think it is 'over' due to lack of access.
Even if they are aware, only a handful are willing to use extra apparatus to access the rest of the product.

REQUIREMENT GENERATION

From my insights and research, I listed down the characteristics that I wanted my product to have. They included:

  • Zero waste

  • Portable

  • No extra parts

  • Stylish

  • Elegant

  • 100% access

  • Easy to use

PROTOTYPING

I created a 1:1 scale prototype by 3D printing the structure, then layering it with putty to give it a smooth finish. This was finished off by painting with acrylic paint to give it the marble effect as shown.
